About Us
Sometime in 1992, creative entrepreneurs Wade Weigel, Alex Calderwood and David Petersen envisioned offering a quality, affordable haircut in a casual environment. They refined their ideas and immediately began construction. The result: a reinvented barbershop that incorporated music, style and art. On January 2, 1993 the first Rudy's in opened its doors on Pine Street in Seattle's Capitol Hill district.
MUSIC:
Music has always been important to the founders of Rudy's, and from the start has been a vital component of Rudy's culture. In the 90's Rudy's was affiliated with the hip concert promotion company, Tasty Shows. Tasty pioneered new artists, and often sold tickets exclusively through Rudy's for bands such as Massive Attack, Air, Chemical Brothers, Jamiroquai, Daft Punk and Erykah Badu. And while the city of Seattle banned the posting of band flyers on telephone poles, Rudy's encouraged bands to post their flyers inside the shops. Today, most Rudy's shops feature a limited stock of handpicked CDs. Rudy's continues to sell concert tickets for all genres of music, and is known to employ many musicians. Thus, Rudy's has become synonymous with Seattle's music scene.
ARTS:
Champions of emerging artists, Rudy's opened their first shop with a mural done by a local Seattle graf crew called DVS. Later, they commissioned a large mural by Shepard Fairey of "Andre the Giant" fame, and also placed a large KAWS piece in one of the shops. Art continues to play a major part in each of their ventures including contemporary murals by neo graffiti artist OJAS in Rudy's Portland Pearl District and Eric Elms in LA's Melrose shop.
PRODUCTS:
Items available at Rudy's include concert tickets, t-shirts, hats, magazines and select items including Comme des Garcons wallets, Blinde sunglasses, Dean accessories, Havaianas flip flops, limited edition trainers and products by Bumble and bumble and Malin+Goetz.
